Thomas and Friends is a children's television series about the adventures of Thomas, a cheeky tank engine and his friends. It is based on the books by Wilbert Awrdy and his son, the Railway series.
Today Thomas the tank engine is enjoyed by children the world over. There are now over 12 series of the regular Thomas television shows and a number of special one off feature length DVDs, the most popular being Day of the Diesels and Misty Island Rescue.
One of the reason that Thomas and Friends are loved by parents and children the world over is the wholesome nature of Thomas the tank. The engines on Sodor, the mystical island that Thomas inhabits, all have different colors and numbers. Indeed my own son learnt his primary colors and numbers 1 - 10 while watching and playing with Thomas Wooden Railways. They are all honest and prise being really useful above all else.
In addition to the Thomas TV series and Thomas DVDs are the well loved Thomas Wooden Railways. These allow your children to recreate the adventures of Thomas and Friends with scale wooden toys.
Thomas and friends was first broadcast in the UK in 1984. The classic series has the steam engines as beautiful models with talking, expressive faces. Later series used increasingly special effects and later animation. The well known, recent Day of the Diesels is all animated. Thomas, known by his friends as the cheeky one, is depicted as cheeky having a short stumpy funnel, dome and boiler with 6 six wheels. He has his own branch line and his favorite coaches are Annie and Clarebel. They often encouraged an enthusiastic Thomas to get into mischief.
Percy, who likes to help and share, is a green engine who is a close friend of Thomas. He is occasionally naïve and in Day of the Diesels is led astray by a devious Diesel 10. The engines work for the fat controller, real name Sir Topham hat, who owns the Railway and keeps them all in line. He ensures all his engines are really useful.
